Getting found on Google

Most people looking for somewhere to play board games start with a Google search. If your venue or group isn't showing up, you're invisible to the people most likely to walk through your door.

This guide covers the basics of getting your space found on Google Maps. It takes about 15 minutes and it's completely free.

Step 1: Claim your Google Business Profile

Go to business.google.com and search for your venue name. If it already exists, claim it. If not, create a new listing. This is free and takes about 10 minutes. Google will verify you own the business, usually by sending a postcard or making a phone call.

Step 2: Choose the right category

Your primary category is the single most important ranking factor for local search. Choose the most specific option that applies to you:

  • Board game cafe or Board game club if that's your main thing
  • Game store or Hobby shop if you sell games
  • Cafe or Pub as a secondary category if gaming is one part of your business

You can add multiple categories. Start with the most specific one as your primary, then add broader ones as secondary.

Step 3: Write a real description

Your Google Business description should mention the words people actually search for: board games, tabletop gaming, card games, RPGs, Dungeons and Dragons, gaming cafe. Write naturally. Don't stuff keywords. Just describe what you do and what someone can expect when they visit.

Step 4: Add photos

Listings with photos get 42% more direction requests on Google Maps. Add at least 5 photos:

  • Your space during a game night (people playing, good atmosphere)
  • Your game collection or shelves
  • The entrance or exterior (helps people find you)
  • Food and drink, if applicable
  • Any unique features (private rooms, event space, terrain for miniatures)

Step 5: Keep your listing current

Update your opening hours when they change. Reply to reviews (even short responses show you're active). Post updates about events, new games in stock, or seasonal changes. Google rewards active listings with better visibility.

Step 6: Get listed on Roll for Company

Having your venue on Roll for Company creates another link to your business online, which helps your Google ranking. We also send players directly to your Google Maps listing, your website, and your events.

If you're already listed, find your venue and claim it to manage your profile, post updates, and connect with local players.
